“for where two or three are gathered in my name, I am there among them.” — Matthew 18:20
Members of the Wade in the Water Ministry will be leading the Lenten book discussion over the first five weeks of Lent (we will not meet on Palm Sunday). We will be reading the book, Just Mercy by Bryan Stevenson. In the book, Stevenson describes his experiences working for justice in the American criminal justice system, including his founding of the Equal Justice Initiative.
We hope to use this discussion group to further affirm our commitment as a community to interrupt the sin of racism. The criminal justice system has been — and continues to be — one of the areas of American society most infected by racial inequality and oppression. Reading Just Mercy will allow us an opportunity to discuss how the oppression of criminal justice affects people of all races, but disproportionately affects people of color.
We want you to engage with the readings and bring your own questions and thoughts to the discussions. In addition, facilitators will provide you with some prompts to consider for readings for the following week. As we travel this journey during this season of penitence, we want to remember to always be asking: “Where is God?” and “What commitment do we have as Christians?”
