Refugee Committee Good Neighbor Volunteer Training

Wednesday, October 18 at 7:00 p.m.

Grace Church is sponsoring a refugee family through the “Good Neighbor program” at Lutheran Social Services of the Nation Capital Area (LSS/NCA). This is a volunteer training for everyone interested in helping support the family once they arrive. The training will be led by LSS/NCA in the Undercroft at Grace Church. Mira Mendick of LSS/NCA will be giving a brief overview of refugee resettlement and our Good Neighbor roles and responsibilities. Then she will split us up into smaller groups to run through some scenarios. She’ll talk about the resettlement process, the different roles of our teams (welcome team, transportation team, employment team, etc.), and our financial commitment to the family. She will also discuss background checks, needed for any volunteers who will be spending an hour or more a week with the family or driving them anywhere. After the meeting it could be 90 days (or earlier, or later..) before we are assigned an arriving family. Everyone interested in participating is encouraged to attend.
