Advent at Grace Church

Advent is a time of hope and anticipation as we look for Christ coming into the world, and we have many ways to experience this special season and share God’s grace with those around us.

Advent Wreath Making – Sunday December 3
We start the season of Advent with Advent wreath making from 9:00-10:15 a.m. in the Undercroft. Parishioners are invited to make an Advent wreath for their family to help countdown to Christmas.

Afternoon Worship – Sundays @ 5:30 p.m.
Our Sunday afternoon service continues throughout Advent. Featuring all of our favorite Lift Every Voice and Sing (LEVAS) hymns and other well-known gospel songs, as well as scripture readings with a brief homily, prayers and communion, this service is another way to experience the season of Advent if you cannot make it to church on Sunday morning.

Mindfulness Practices to Nourish Family Connections – Wednesdays, December 6, 13 & 20
Our family connections are often tested by the pace and expectations of the holiday season. Simple practices of mindfulness can be restoring and refreshing, nourishing our inner peace so that we can “be peace” as we interact with others in stressful moments. Join us in the Chapel and Sanctuary from 6:30-7:45 p.m. for an opportunity to pause and refresh on three Wednesday evenings during Advent. We will offer guided sitting and walking meditation, followed discussion and an introduction to simple mindfulness practices that can be taken home and into family gatherings. No experience with meditation is needed.

Second Sunday Supper – Sunday, December 10 @ 6:30 p.m.
Immediately following our 5:30 p.m. worship service, we will have a fellowship dinner in the Undercroft. There is no need to bring anything. Simply come enjoy a delicious meals and celebrate the holidays.

Christmas Caroling at Grace – Sunday, December 17 @ 6:30 p.m.
Grace’s annual Christmas caroling event will be begin at 6:30 p.m this year. We carol in the traditional way by choosing houses at random in our local neighborhood. All adults and kids of Grace are invited to carol. The event usually runs about an hour or so, and concludes with hot chocolate shared in the Undercroft.

Eya Ensemble Performance – Sunday, December 10 @ 4:00 p.m.
The Eya Ensemble of three of Washington, DCs most outstanding early music vocal performers, Crossley Hawn, Allison Mondel and Kristen Dubenion-Smith, will sing a special Advent concert at Grace Episcopal this month entitled “The Jesse Tree.” Eya explores Isaiah’s prophecy of the coming of Christ in a program ranging from the monasteries of 13th-century England, to the visionary songs of Hildegard von Bingen, to the grand splendor of Notre Dame Cathedral. Join us for a sublime array of haunting chant and polyphony for Advent on Sunday, December 10, at 4:00pm. The concert is free and open to the public.

Strolling Senior Outings – Wednesdays, December 13 & 20
On Wednesday, December 13, our Strolling Seniors will be attending the 12 noon showing of the musical Pajama Game at the Arena Stage. On Wednesday, December 20, we will attend the Festival of Lights at the Church of Latter Day Saints. The show begins at 7:00 PM.

Christmas Pageant Rehearsal – Sunday, December 17
Children ages 7-18 are invited to celebrate Christmas by participating in our Christmas Pageant at the 5:30 p.m. worship service on Christmas Eve. Children ages 7-11 are invited to dress up and portray certain characters from the nativity story. Youth ages 12-18 are invited to narrate the Christmas story. If you want to participate, let Rev. Amanda know by Sunday, Dec. 10 so she can assign you a role. A pageant rehearsal is scheduled for Sunday, Dec. 17 following the 10:30 service in the nave.

Blue Christmas Service – Tuesday, December 19 @ 7:30 p.m.
Not everyone is in the mood for Christmas cheer. Sometimes, Christmas is something just to get past rather than look toward. Dealing with a loved one’s death, facing life after divorce, or coping with an illness can dampen the Christmas spirit and make celebrating painful. If you are feeling “blue” this Christmas, join us for a special Blue Christmas service, as we search for light amidst the darkness.

Advent Lessons and Carols – Sunday, December 24 @ 10:00 a.m.
We bring the season of Advent to a close with a special service of readings and carols at 10:00 a.m. This service will prepare us for celebrating the birth of Christ later in day. In order for parishioners of all ages to worship together, Advent Lessons and Carols will be a family service. Please note: there will be no communion at this service.
