Rector’s Weekly Reflection

April 25, 2017

Dear Grace Church Family and Friends,

Last week, I rode my bicycle to church one day, and, when it was time to head home, I decided to take the long way back, riding along Sligo Creek trail.

As I reached downtown Silver Spring, I left the trail, pedaling up Piney Branch Road and turning right onto Sligo Avenue, and there, I saw a father with a stroller, standing on the sidewalk. He seemed to be a little impatient, tapping his foot on the pavement and looking about as if he were waiting for something, but it wasn’t until I rode past him that I saw his young daughter.

The little girl was probably eight or nine years old, and she was standing on the sidewalk, as well, smelling the flowers from a garden. The flowers were a bright red, and I imagine they were quite fragrant, because the girl stood there on her tippy toes, arching her back and stretching her neck to get as close to the flowers as possible.

And, I smiled as I watched her, because I knew the father might have been in a rush but this girl wasn’t going anywhere…

Most of us are like that young girl’s father: impatient; in a rush; anxious to get onto the next thing. But, I think the little girl had it right.

As the great golfer, Walter Hagen, once said:  You’re only here for a short visit. Don’t hurry, don’t worry. And, be sure to smell the flowers along the way.

See you in church,
Andrew
