Rector’s Weekly Reflection

May 29, 2018

Dear Grace Church Family and Friends,

Last Friday, I was at a Major League baseball game, watching the New York Yankees play the Los Angeles Angels.

The game was tied 1-1 going into the bottom of the seventh inning, when Gleyber Torres, the Yankees’ sensational rookie second baseman, came to bat. Torres had hit home runs in each of the previous three games, and feeling he might do it again, I pulled out my iphone.

Sure enough, as soon as Torres hit the ball, you could sense it was a home run. The velocity. The trajectory. The fans rose to the feet, and as the ball landed in the stands, everyone went wild. They were cheering and clapping. Strangers high-fiving each other. It was joyful and euphoric. (You can watch my video HERE).

It’s amazing how little things, like watching a favorite team, seeing a home run, can make us so happy. Maybe those little things aren’t so little.

What makes you as happy as those fans? What makes you want to stand up and cheer? Where will you find that kind of joy this week?

See you in church,
