The Director of Music Ministries is a full time position, reporting to the Rector.

$85,000-$105,000, plus benefits, depending on skills and experience.

Position Summary
The Director of Music Ministries will oversee a large and thriving music program that includes an adult choir; an active children’s program, providing musical education and vocal coaching beginning at the age of three; and an annual concert series. Music is an important part of our community and spiritual life, and we are committed to a high standard of excellence. The Director will have a strong background in the Anglican/Episcopal tradition and be very comfortable with other musical styles to enhance our worship and experience of God. The church has recently restored and upgraded the organ (32 rank Aeolian Skinner with a new 3 manual console and digital additions) and has a baby grand piano (2011 Mason & Hamlin), as well as children’s instruments.

Grace Church is a diverse, generously-spirited community located in Silver Spring, MD, just outside the nation’s capital, in the Episcopal Diocese of Washington. The Grace community believes we are called to be that “city on a hill” where people of all races, cultures, backgrounds, and orientations can come to build their relationships with God and others. Grace is a healthy, vibrant congregation with an average Sunday attendance of 300 and an annual budget of about $900,000.


  • Plan music in diversity of styles for all worship services and other occasional events, working collaboratively with clergy, and using the 1982 Hymnal; Lift Every Voice and Sing; Wonder, Love and Praise; and other approved resources.
  • Play organ (minimum Bachelor’s degree level; Master’s preferred) and piano at a very high level.
  • Lead/Conduct Adult Choir and children’s choirs.
  • Oversee/Teach music and vocal/choral training for children and youth.
  • Organize annual Music of Grace concert series and summer Choir Camp for children and youth.
  • Build relationships with all parishioners, including families, children, and youth.
  • Actively support diversity and other Core Values of Grace Church.
  • Collaborate with Church staff and lay leaders to support parish life, and work within established budgets.


  • Experience as Music/Choir Director at an established church or institution.
  • Love of music and passion for sharing that love with others.
  • Substantial experience as a Music/Choir Director.
  • Knowledge of Anglican/Episcopal music and liturgy.
  • Excellence in musicianship across a diverse range of musical styles.
  • Experience in choral direction across a diverse range of musical styles.
  • Experience in working with children, teaching elementary music theory and vocal coaching.
  • Desire to develop the music program at Grace in new and imaginative ways.
  • Willing to collaborate and be part of a team, serving God with a sense of humor and joy.
